Hellfyre (Bedford) - Xmas Eve - Friday 24th December 2010
Esquires will now be closed for 'refurbishment' so who knows when the next event will be. All I know is the last seven months of Hellfyres have been very enjoyable for all involved and if you didn't attend any of them, then you really missed out.
That's it for me DJ wise in 2010 (and I hear your sighs of relief!) What few guest slots I've done have all been really good fun, so fingers crossed for 2011 that I'm more busier. As usual, thanks to all those that have supported me, especially at The Coven.

Clockwork - Friday 17th December 2010 (Luton, G2)
It’s been a long while to wait since the June night was cancelled due to the poxy world cup, but it was sure worth the wait. As expected with such a busy line-up, I was asked to pretty much go first. I got to play for a bit longer than expected, which is always great in my book, especially with so many of the songs being 5 minutes plus!
As any enjoyable set goes, it ended all too soon, and I left the night in the very capable hands of organisers Callum and Belinda to host the three great bands:- WILDLIFE / SPIKED & GUN CRIME.
As always, I hope to invited back in the new year for more of the psychedelic stuff.

Small Paul's Phabulous Party Phenomenon III - Saturday 20th November 2010
I arrived circa 8pm to find Flexo Chris in his usual state of lost. Once again, his mobile phone (with backing tracks) and leads were nowhere to be found. I then found out that the ODC drummer wasn’t going to arrive till around 10.30pm. So much for structure.
I wanted to start the night at 9pm, but thanks to the jukebox and the G2s reluctance to turn it off, I had to threaten to walk before I finally got to start. Luckily Tinitus Pete had arrived on time, which is more that could be said about our actual host! Flexo Chris finally arrived 90 minutes later and after a brief sound check, we got underway. Once again, the DJ mixer was fucked and I occasionally had to manually tweak the cables to get both channels to work! Audience wise, we were a bit quiet to begin with, but the night soon picked up. ODC played a magnificent set, and a great night finally transpired. Before I knew it, it was kicking out time!
Thanks to everybody that showed up. We’ve no plans to do anymore this year, but ‘look out’ 2011!

Sacrilege (Cambridge) - Friday 19th November
We arrived just as the club was opening and quickly got settled with bottled beers and a nice position in which to gaze at the barmaids arse. After nearly two very cold hours, a friendly face finally appeared, but not the hordes of people we were expecting in support.
Luckily, the DJ area was warmer and I quickly got settled into my set which I’d solely based on Sacrileges previous set lists. The dancefloor slowly started to fill, although several songs sent people flying! Luckily, the hour flew by and by 1am we decided to seek home due to the following night’s entertainment. As always, thanks to my hosts DJ Alix & Dvae for inviting me to play.

Small Paul's Phabulous Party Phenomenon II - Saturday 23rd October 2010
We had a much better turn out, especially considering that one of the bands had pulled out a few days previously, but nobody really seemed to be bothered. Definite highlight of the night was ‘Flexo’. So much passion for such a small bloke! Replacement band S.W.A.N.K. didn’t get a chance to play due to lack of time and the karaoke but it’s not like they haven’t played G2 before! I didn’t really pay much attention to the karaoke this time due to socialising with so many friends, but did manage to defile a Doors song!
Once again, I’d run my playlist upto about two hours, but only played a very few songs from it. The plan was to finish the night of myself, but due to the few people that were left and the music style that Tinitus was finishing on, I decided not to bother. Going from ska to horrorpunk I felt really wouldn’t work, but I did manage to get the one request I was asked for played as a finishing song!
Theoretically, this was the last ‘Phabulous Party’ so thanks to all that supported it and helped with the chaos. I’m sure we’ll return under another name some time soon.

Small Paul's Phabulous Party Phenomenon - Saturday 18th September 2010
Love ‘em or loath them, QL performed to their usual standard, although it appears not everybody finds them as interesting as I do. Having been stuck in the booth, I was coerced into doing the sound for the band and subjected to a drunken rant from a very obviously upset gentlemen that didn’t appreciate the musical offerings! I couldn’t really understand due to the noise levels so just told him to fuck off if he didn’t like it! With small Paul fronting the band for the first song, the set was overall too quickly, and QL shot off to the rival pub for another gig as SWANK.
Another brief DJ set, and The Adenoids were on. I’d managed to escape the DJ booth and got somebody to sort the sound out as I was back to my usual video duties. Another great set considering the last minute organising and obvious lack of band practise!
Next up was the ‘Cock-Rock Karaoke’ which again was set up in very little time, but proved rather successful. Kudos to Bekkie Adenoid for organising it, although it was yours truly that got stuck comparing most of the show! It always makes me laugh how people are so reluctant to join in, and then all of a sudden you’re inundated with requests to perform! I started off the singing proving that most of the time you shouldn’t really give me a microphone – if only for volume issues!
After about an hour of slaughtering some classic rock, I finished of the night with an eclectic collection of songs which all proved to be popular enough to get people dancing. Ah alcohol – what would we do without you!

Hellfyre (Bedford) - Friday 25th June 2010
Hellfyres opening night with the promise of more to come if the night was successful. And there was no way this night isn't going to come back as it was rammed (well, certainly busy for Bedford than I've seen in a long while.) Usually you have to wait till around kicking out time for people to arrive at Esquires, but shortly after opening, people were already dancing. Definately the sign of a good night.
So kudos to DJ Gothydude for taking on the task of starting a new night and I think it's gonna be a lot more busier at the next event. I just hope to get asked back again one day!

Clockwork - Friday 19th March 2010 (Luton G2)
At last, my first guest DJ slot of 2010. As I told what few people that came to support me, I’ve been hassling the Clockwork lads since July 2009 for a chance to play some psych’ 60s, and finally it happened.
I must admit it was weird to be back in the George 2nd after all this time, plus the recent let downs by the management for the one-off eighties night I’d been trying to organise, so it was good to be invited by the lads instead.
Anyway, the night in question, the pub was very full due to the ageing blues outfit, Nine Below Zero playing across the road. I was originally going to attend this night, but the job loss has stopped all such necessary socialising, so to be invited to play across the road was god send! As per expected, the pub numbers thinned out around 9pm, but I was left with a fairly good crowd to play to, all of which seemed to enjoy my offerings.
In fact, I can’t honestly remember when I had so many compliments on my set, including the Clockwork lads, The Knockouts and crowd. Both bands played extremely well, considering how awful the PA is in G2, especially considering that the keyboard player for The Knockouts was suffering from a migraine.
So thanks very much to Daniel and Calum for inviting me to play, and to those few that took the time to support me. Its always greatly appreciated.

Alt+Ctrl Post Halloween Party - 6th November 2009
Well, as Halloween events go, it wasn't really what I had planned. I can only assume that the post-Whitby blues and various flu symptoms currently going around were the main reason for the lack of punters.
Still, the show must go on, and regardless of the fact the first DJ over played considering he had already played the first 90 minutes (and I use the term very very loosely -i.e. 20 second delays in between songs, decks not set-up at all, same bands played in quick succession etc) I lost my first fifteen minutes promptly messing up my original plans to create some type of gothic atmosphere and had to resort to club classics to refill the dancefloor.
Indeed, seems that people were obviously no longer in the Halloween spirit with a host of requests for standard 80s, and a heavy influenced bias for EBM, the latter I had not really prepared myself for, having recently taken out a hugh section of EBM/Industrial from my collection due to my change of tastes.
Anyway, thanks to Sabine for the kind invitation to play once again.

Whitby Goth Weekend - The Coliseums Horror Punk event - Saturday 31st October
I started off proceedings this time, due to this being a genre I’m only really starting off in and Stu definitely a veteran off. As this event was advertised so close to the actual Whitby weekend, it was no surprise that the event wasn’t particularly very well attended, but it’s a definite step in the right direction for the Whitby event.
All friends attending the weekend mainly all had Spa tickets, and with stiff competition elseware, I think we did pretty well overall with numbers. The best thing was, all those that attended, stayed (apart from the arseholes that tried to worm they way in on a discount just because it was a tad quiet, but what did they expect at 8.30pm?)
11.20pm arrived very quickly and together, DJ Evil Stu and I played a great range of bands that had toes taping all night long. Plans were to head back to The Spa afterwards but by the time I’d offloaded my CD cases I was too knackered and opted for watching Halloween on the TV!

Whitby Goth Weekend - The Spa Pavilion - Friday 30th October 2009
So, after a very drunk night in The Shambles on Thursday, meeting up with friends, old and new, Friday’s event slowly arrived, with my mood becoming better. We arrived circa 6.45pm to be greeted by Martin Oldgoth and DJ Evil Stu and various other involved people. The venue itself didn’t actually seem any bigger than Camden’s Electric Ballroom, but the DJ set-up was placed in the offside position to the main stage surrounded by two big potted plants!
The night got underway with DJ Evil Stu starting, and before I knew it, I was DJing. Apart from the annoying interruption of dreadful introduction music for the compare and the fact that Stu ops for the “cross fading” method of DJing, I had no problems throughout the night.
It was a little disorientating having to be so far away from the stage and speakers, and we had to have a security guard on hand to watch our CDs as it was so open, but otherwise it was a spectacular night to play.
Sets from Grooving In Green, (the very late) Zombina And the Skeletones and The Eden House proved very popular, but as soon as the bands had finished, a majority of the guests seemed to leave, regardless of the fact The Spa was hosting the latest running night till 4am all weekend.
Still, those that chose to stay all seemed pretty happy, even with the manager of Tin Omen congratulating me on the airing of their new EP. Requests were plentiful, so I chose to ignore the majority of the advanced requests via the Whitby Forum in favour of those that were actually there.
DJ Evil Stu and I worked very well together throughout the night, making me more relaxed for the next nights event at The Coliseum.

Devilish Presley @ The Gaff 7.8.2009
Anyway, thanks to Cavey Nik being away in Germany, Devilish Presley kindly asked me to fill in for the evening, and after a few technical difficulties (also experienced by the DJ the night before) I got underway. All went well, apart from me cueing up the wrong Sweet song specifically picked to play on this very night, due to only having 5 seconds to load it, and having an incorrect running list thanks to Amazon! Still, I got some great feedback from all the bands and it was great to see the audience enjoying my sets, especially as this is not really specifically my forte.
Anyway, both Bleak & Church Of Confidence were very entertaining, and tbh, Devilish Prelsey just get better everytime I see them perform. Thanks again to Johnny & Jacqui for inviting me down. As per usual, check 'em out whenever you can. (i.e. Bedford Esquires 2nd October 2009)

Luton Aid 5 - 25.7.2009
I witnessed some great bands, and thanks to the Lester Allen Band (with their set described to me as "the type of music you're liable to hear on the escalator down to hell" and messing up the set times for the rest of the day, everything went pretty well.
As per usual, we left before the last band, where I collapsed in my back garden after consuming alcohol for nearly eleven hours, but at student prices, I will take advantage every time!

So with myself, Sabine and CyberAndy, apart from the late start, usual sound problems and the baffling fact that Esquires DJ equipment is totally knackered and occasionally refused to play various cds, the night was great fun and a total success.
You'll be pleased to know I'll also be guesting at the next event on Friday 17th July with Martin Oldgoth and Djane Velouria Rose where we attempt to educate the masses and bring deathrock to Bedford for the 'Psycho Zombies & Mad Dolls' event!
So thanks to Sabine for the guest slot, and for Sam & Nath for letting me crash at theirs afterwards.

Dead & Buried Xmas Party - 20th December 2008
Another great night at London's premier deathrock club, and to our surprise, a quiet one to boot, but that didn't mean that fun wasn't to be had. In fact, I'd say it was one of the most enjoyable and certainly quickest night we'd ever experienced, my sets just over 50 minutes each, only seeming like five! A great hard-core support from all my 'out-of-town' friends from Southampton, Basingstoke, London and good ole Bedford Ed!
As usual, big thanks to small Paul for the chauffeur duties and for Cavey Nik for inviting me to play his great club once more. Don't forget, Dead & Buried moves to the first Saturday of the month come January 2009, so make sure you add your support.
This was also my last night celebrating my 40th birthday - it's been a great week and a brilliant way to finish my DJ duties for the year!

Luton Aid III - 26th July 2008
This year, Loopy decided that she wanted in, and was resigned to reception, so we didn't really see much of each other throughout the day. Occasionally she was given leave to see a band, and I'd pop in after doing a shift. Due to band times, I was unable to see Rogue, but the upstairs bands entertained me well enough. As usual, the band times over run, but two bands failed to show up (not good promotion at all!) so it evened itself out quite well.
The only band that didn't impress me were Cerberus. Talk about unprofessional. For the oldest band on the day, they treated the gig like it was their own. Every other band set up upstairs and spent 5-10 mins soundchecking then left the stage for me to continue DJing and generally entertaining, albeit to an empty room, but you could still here the music outside so I didn't mind, but even with 30 minutes to spare (which was really my time) Cerberus decided to use that full time and just mucked about. After 20 minutes of waiting to DJ, I just left them to it.
Another incident, due to the heat, as soon as the bands downstairs had finished, apparently, everybody ran back upstairs, leaving poor ole DJ Dan (aka DJ Satan!) to also also play to an empty room. Come the evening, he basically demanded that he play a set upstairs as I seemed to have most of the audience. I decided to let him as I couldn't be bothered to argue the case, also giving me a bit more time to chat outside. After 20 minutes, he came back and told me exactly what I expected would happen. The band finished, he started to play, and everybody fucked off outside! I knew it was gonna happen as it'd been the same all day for me, but had excepted this eventuallity before I'd even arrived, knowing I was only there as background entertainment!

UK Decay Class Reunion II - 27th January 2007
What a fucking great night. My head is still spinning from all excitement. The vibe through the night was just fantastic, obviously helped by the surprise performance of UK Decay themselves.
Believe me people, if you didn't bother coming, you missed a night of history in the making.
First band up, Jesus Christ Supercharger, played a stomping garage surf set, reminscent of Hawaii Five O meets Pulp fiction! As stated, UK Decay appeared to play "For My Country" (twice), with The Adenoids after adding their chaotic style, with Matt from Rogue joining them for a couple of songs.
I didn't really pay too much attention to the other two bands, Los Cyclones or Hot-Wired as I was to busy chatting and circulating. Unfortunately, but not surprising, the bands went over the alloted time, leaving myself & Nick Switch with only half the time to DJ, but we had the whole room stomping by the end of the night.
Here's what I managed to squeeze in before the lights went on.....

Dead Kennedys - California Uber Alles

UK Decay Class Reunion III - 7th June 2008
Upon arrival at the venue (5pm), checked out both DJ booths (after hunting down the key to release the isolator) distribute what few Coven fliers I had left and put up posters and wait for the bar to open! By the time the event got underway, we were too busy chatting to bother watching the punk film, but made sure we were first in queue for another great set from The Adenoids. We stayed upstairs for DJ Bonzi until Rogue boarded the stage. Certainly not one of my most favourite performances, with one guitarist missing as he'd mistakenly decided to go and see The Foo Fighters, but they just didn't do it for me this time around.
As soon as they'd finished, we ran downstairs for the first big band of the night - Click Click. I only really discovered them a few years back, but since then, can't get enough. I managed to capture their first song of the night, then spent the rest of the gig dancing.
After the smallest half hour I've ever experienced, we shot back upstairs for S.W.A.N.K. Even after only 3 bands, the times were already over-running, and after a frantic dancing session, had to run downstairs for the main event - UK Decays first full gig for 25 years.
After a few minutes of techical problems, they roared onstage for some 40 minutes banging out their classics such as Sexual, Unexpected Guests, and surprisingly, Testament (dedicated to Steve Harle). Again I got some video footage, but wanted to enjoy the band so put it away after a couple of songs.
After that dramatic and sensational gig, most peoples nights were over. Regadless that Rubella Ballet were also playing a little later, upon venturing back downstairs to check them out, there wasn't even half the crowd compared to UK Decay, plus I'm not much of a fan, so left them to it.
Bearing in mind that there was still my DJ set to play, and with RBs being the headliners, came the usual bullshit extra long soundchecks knocking the time onto 12.30am before they finished, which then meant I wasn't due on till 1.15am. Off course by this time, 99% of people were either outside making the most of warm weather and garden, or gone home, and I was stuck playing to around 10 people! I did remark about closing the night after 5 songs, but was told to continue a bit longer, until those that remained had also buggered off upstairs.
I managed to play a few of my planned songs, but ended up with this selection...
Shadow Reichenstein - Wakin' The Dead
Killing Joke - Pssyche
Sex Pistols - Substitute
The Clash - 1977
The Expolited - Dead Cities
The Cramps - Can your Pussy Do The Dog
The Ruts - Staring At The Rude Boys
The Toys Dolls - Ernie Had A Hernia
Public Image Limited - Public Image ®
The Jam - Batman
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Metal Postcard
Gary Numan - We Are So Fragile
Joy Division - She's Lost Control
As you can imagine, after closing downstairs early, I wasn't exactly in a good mood or very impressed with the amount of people that were still upstairs, including my bloody wife that didn't bother coming down to add support. So after I'd calmed down we left. I was hoping to catch the aftershow party, but after getti!g home and having a rant, Loopy being sick and the general come-down, we went to bed exhausted.
All in all, it was one fucking great experience, with over 400 in attendance, seeing bands I'd never thought I'd ever experience, catching up with people I hadn't seen since the last event, and the cheapest bar I'd encountered in a long time, combined with what added up to 9 solid drinking and having fun! Really nothing else could ever come close, and I shall never forget it.
Black Planet (Bedford) - 20th October 2007
The Jamm Tribute Band @ Charlie Browns 25.5.2007
My main worry, and I'm not sure why, was whether my cd-rs would work on their system, so my case was loaded with extras just to weigh me down that little bit more. The desk was pretty standard, with the optional extra dodgy cd draw that threatened to only half open every time, and the headphone socket that rattled within its housing, but simple enough to use.
The support group apparently were not playing, thus leaving me to play a little bit extra before The Jamm came on stage. The band themselves executed an excellent performance, with their own occasional renditions. I haven't seen these guys since St.Albans in 1999, but they haven't slowed down one bit. A stonking gig, with a very rowdy crowd, all of whom thoroughly relived their teenage life with lustre for two extra hours.Usual standard set of "greatest hits" but a great way to get the crowd going.
Come 11.15pm, I was back on the decks, with 101 requests, although strangely, I had to decline the Slade song, of which I never had anyway! The house DJ was frustrating late, thus again, leaving me to play over my allotted time. I finally ended my sets about 12.45pm and ran for outside. Boy, it was a hot night. I can only guess what happened next, as a majority of the crowd left after me, obviously disappointed with the continued music selection!
So, kudos to Andy Sizmar for making the night happen. We can expect great things.

And if even if such a list exists, this was certainly one of the things I've wanted to do, and fate seems had its plan! Anyway, I couldn't have asked for a better night, regardless that the sound engineer had wired up the decks in reverse and even after changing a few of the cables around, didn't seem to make any difference so I played with a rather difficult handicap but that didn't stop me from providing a great build up and a busy dance floor.
If indeed frustrating to the audience, if not myself, last minute addition of The Savages did very much over play their set, and I was inundated with people asking when I was back DJing. Unfortunately there was little time to be had in-between the bands, and I was hoping for at least an hours play at the end of the night to finish, especially with The Met closing at such an early time in comparison to The Spa but it was not meant to be with The Beauty Of Gemina not finishing till 12.40pm . Oh well, perhaps next time (?)
Anyway, thanks to all those that supported, especially those from my home town that I was certainly not expecting to see on the night. It was a great experience, and a special thanks to Martin Oldgoth for adding me to the bill at the last minute.

Inferno @ The Electric Ballroom - Friday 6th July 2007
Theoretically, I could have asked ages ago, but it never really occurred to me to bother, but then again, my interest in London has never been a great one as regards to clubbing, and let's face it, when you own your own night, why bother?
Anyway, last night put pave to any thoughts, doubts or anxieties I've previously had, and we arrived in London approx 9pm, starting off with a quick couple of drinks at The Dev. The drinks went down that bit too quickly, and before I knew it, the wife and I were off to seek entrance to the club. I never realised that it had a "tradesman entrance" and thanks to Ben, he showed us the way, otherwise, we'd been stuck outside until opening time!
We were quickly greeted by DJ Angel & Spunkylobster, whom were as excitable as usual, and very welcoming. All of a sudden it was 10.30pm, and the shout went out to start the music. By 10.40pm people were in and dancing and before I knew it, the floor was filled up adequately for an opening hour.
My hours slot just flew by, only briefly interrupted by the other DJs bringing in their gear for the later sets. Luckily, my recent back pain completely subsided, and I even managed a little dance, but nothing too mad! I finished my set, managed to down a quick pint, hand out the rest of next weeks Coven flyers, and I left, on a complete high, for which I expect will last till next week!
So thanks to DJ Angel for putting me on, small Paul for driving us down, and to all the Luton crew for their continued and loyal support, plus all the friends I've made in London, new and old.
