Scary Monsters 80x Xmas Night & Year review - 22.12.2017

So that’s 2017 done and dusted. 15 nights, which included four specific themed nights, one tribute night (my personal favourite from all year) two birthday parties and two 80s nights. This includes 111 requests in total with “The Normal - Warm Leatherette” being the most played song throughout the year, so make of that what you will! 

I’m sure that there would have been a few more nights to add to that list if it wasn't for some kind soul vindictively trying to fuck me over to the DWP, not only depriving me of the pleasure of doing what I enjoy most, but also depriving everyone else's enjoyment too, but that’s people for you, and I guess I'll continue into 2018 with my trust sadly lacking that little bit more!

Regardless, DJ wise, I've had a very enjoyable year, making new friends, and experiencing some of the best music I can lay my hands on, introducing some brilliant new acts into my nights, as well as the more alternative classics.

As for the 80s night in question, not quite as busy as expected, but needless to say, a great and fun way to end my year, with the fun crowd out, and some new support to boot! As per usual, my thanks to all those that have supported me throughout 2017, with special thanks to our occasional guest DJ Uncle Filthy, and The George IInd staff for putting up with the weird and wonderful nights I've made them endure throughout the months. We're very lucky to still have such a venue to run these nights, so please continue to support when you can to ensure we continue well into 2018!

A Dream of Dark And Troubling Things - 15.12.2017

So, that's the 49th nail in the coffin securely hammered home, with the hope that if and when the 50th arrives, I'll be in another country far far away!! Regardless, the time is now, and birthday & Xmas stuff needs doing, so what better excuse do you need for a night down the pub! And with special occasions, I fancied making a bit more of an effort, even with being knackered from the NMA concert the previous night, and pulled out one of my old Coven lights and smoke machine for a bit more atmos. Only problem at the time was, in my haste, I'd forgotten my allen keys for the stand for the light, so the first thanks goes to "Jenni the techie" to save the day for the lend.

Anyway, it wasn't long before the night was underway, with dancing pretty much kicking off immediately, regardless that most of my friendly support had decided to take root sitting on the dancefloor! (Remind me to move the chairs and tables for next weeks adventures!) So with balloons blown up, away we went, and although the majority of 'interested' from the Facebook event page not showing up, luckily the pub had a great and friendly crowd, all happy with my pre-selected music for the night, making the dancefloor busy all night and adding to my excitement for next Fridays Xmas 80s bash!

There are definitely some gaps in my memory from the night, with even re-reading the set-list not jogging any memories, but I do remember being up dancing quite often, and remembering to take all my equipment home come finish, even if some of it sat outside the house all night until discovered the next afternoon!!

So thank you to all that showed up and wished me a happy birthday in person, the cards and the drinks that I was lucky to receive, and to Barbara for the lift home with all the gear. See you next week to do it all again!

Exterminate All Rational Thought - 17.11.2017

As promised, another plethora on board the sexual ambulance of musical madness, loosely inspired around the classic Naked Lunch! Essentially, the *last in my alterantive jaunt through 2017, so I was pleased to see a good amount of friendly faces throughout the night. This in-turn always inspires the mind to be more diverse and bring you the alternative night this town so sorely deserves. I certainly was great to include the new tracks from Grendel and last minute addition Black Light Ascension, although I did receive the new Godflesh album on the actual day, but I think I'll be keeping that for myself as I seriously doubt Luton will ever be ready for that!

So, forgetting about the excruciating pain of my back for a few hours, and replacing my over-the-counter medicine with the more natural healing power of apples (OK, so I spent the night drowning myself in cider!) we managed to get through the night without any problems, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves along the way. So with usual applaud, I thank those that showed support, and to DJ Uncle Filthy to his innovative input for the better part of the night.

*Officially, we're back in January 19th for the crudely titled  'January Embers' but will be back in  December for my birthday night on the 15th, and off course, the 'Scary Monsters Xmas 80s Night' on the 22nd.

Bit of an odd night really. My absence for three months obviously hadn't really made much of a difference to the local scene, but luckily, the usual loyal bods blessed the night with their presence, and for that I'm eternally grateful. I even managed to play all the allotted new music I was hoping for, as well as quite a bit more dance/industrial I'd planned, even if the key audience we're in attendance and that I lost nearly an hours worth of playing time with the pub closing a tad earlier than usual, but shit happens I guess!

So, as life hopefully seems to be getting back to some kind of normality (although whether this is in fact a good thing!) I'll be back on Friday 17th November, with the mad DJ Uncle Filthy back in the guest chair for another round-up of all that is alternative, where we hope to see more of you!

Rising From The Gregg 2 22.7.2017

Brilliant tribute night and great to catch up with friends, and all in the good cause of remembering our friend Gregg Herbert, and for the worthy cause for the Luton Cat Welfare, and with my lack of compassion for humans at this time, it couldn’t of been more appropriate! I’m proud to hear we managed to raise £530 for the charity, and not a single halo was polished in the process!!
Spent the first part of the night at The Hat Factory seeing Luton band ‘Dinges’ again, and one of my past favourites from the local scene ‘Rogue’ blasting out their political terror to the masses. Headlining, where Psychobilly band ‘Mystery Action’ whom entertained us with an interesting variety of Cramps songs and the like which certainly kept me entertained!

Following this, I headed over to The George 2nd and was eventually allowed to set up and start my own tribute set, which tbh, just caught the crowd in time. So the beer flowed, the music cranked and a great night was had by all in support, and I was proud to be part of the night.

In The Cruel Garden of Dark Delights 21.7.2017

Ok, so my apologies first that this blog is as late as it is. Unfortunately, my problems with the Department of Worthless Parasites states that I’m basically not allowed to volunteer my services to entertain my friends whilst claiming, so make of that what you will, but I'm fed up with putting my life on hold for these bastards, so fuck it - time to continue entertaining. So we soldier on against ‘the man’ maybe a tad more paranoid and a lot less trusting, but let's hope common sense prevails, although let’s not hold our breath!!

So, with the night in question being my 15th anniversary of playing for in Luton, obviously I was hoping for a tad more support from friends I’ve made from over the years, but again, the vale of summer and planning nights in July don’t usually hold out much hope which is why I don’t usually bother. Still, I was glad t have the company of those that did support, and of course, my trusted sidekick DJ Unclefilthy, whom never fails to entertain even at my lowest ebb. And in reality, did goad me into doing the night in the first place!! So, fun was had, regardless that I really didn’t want to be out in public with the possibility that big brother (or some cunt) was out their watching my every move!!

Modern Psyche @ The Bear Club 15.6.2017

Ever since the hosting "Psyche Night In Luton" at G2, The Bear Club was the place where really I wanted to perform this night, it already having the chilled and relaxed atmosphere before you even walk in the door! So you can appreciate, I was nervous as hell leading up to this night, especially with support for my usual nights being rather lacklustre of recent, plus with the added pressure of playing a different genre entirely. But I'm pleased to say that the opening night couldn't of gone any better, with a good crowd already en-mass, with plenty more to still attend, and most importantly, nobody leaving once I started to play!!

Why Pamper Lifes Complexities? 9.6.2017

Another fun, if not quiet night. But this still gave me a good chance to play the newer material I've been listening too for the past few months including Merciful Nuns, Depeche Mode and The Janitors to name a few, although with the lack of alternative support, the last half of the night ended up in the usual mix of classics to keep the locals happy, but then we did have an unexpected appearance from Spiderman And Superman, so I guess this pretty much keeps the night to its usual weird essence! So thanks to those that did support, and I'll be back at G2 in late July for another mad mix of the morose, plus I'll be DJing for a special charity night, so keep watching for the adverts.

Wild & Wonderful @ The Black Horse 26.5.2017

As previously stated on the invite page, its been almost 8 years since the heady days of DJing "Thursday Fury" at The Black Horse, and as history tend to constantly repeat itself, I find myself here once more! So with the sun beating down all day, and the majority of the punters drinking in the beer garden, the night settled in pretty well, with a small but friendly group joining me at the DJ table for the duration. Plenty of compliments about my music selection, plus a minimum of requests, this turned out to be a very pleasant and enjoyable night, with a hope to be back playing again soon. So many thanks to the few that did accept my invitation, and to Chris the landlord for asking me to play in the first place! Keep watching the skies!

Its not very often I promote or advertise a playlist from a birthday party, but this night was for a friends 50th that I first got to know him back when I was around 20 and he still amazingly turns up at my DJ nights and originally, he booked me about 3 years ago to do this night, so thought I'd better!!

One Night In Rammstein 12.5.2017

Another great had written into the pages of history of The George IInd, and most definitely a night never to be repeated. Can't say I particularly fancy listening to Rammstein again for a while though! So, yes. As advertised, we managed a FULL 5 hours and with only one complaint on the night!! Not a single request, although I think I was only 3 songs short of the whole back catalogue by the end.

The night itself ticked over very nicely, although I can't help feel that if those 50 "interested" on the Facebook event page could of made a little more of an effort, it would of been one of the best nights of the year type thing! Just saying! Regardless, if you did miss out on the event, then rest assured you really did miss out!

So, the thanks begin. First off, a very well done to the G2 staff for putting up with the change of direction of music for the night and for all your hard help as per usual. Thanks to those that were kind enough to help advertise and spread the word. There were certainly plenty of people in attendance that I didn't know, and finally to all those that did support and make the night worthwhile, even those that I know didn't want to be there!! 

Officially, I'm back on Friday 9th June for a back to normal, good ole fashioned alternative night, (Why Pamper Lifes Complexities) mixing all my usual styles with those for a taste of the eclectic, but if you can't wait till then, I've been asked to DJing again this coming weekend (20th) for a birthday party and everyone is welcome.

Doppelgänger 10.3.2017

"All's well that's end well" is probably the best summation for this evenings musical tribute to Curve. In actual fact, the two people that I know that used to really love Curve, in reality, actually hate my guts, so expecting a good support was, I suppose, somewhat unrealistic on my behalf!!
But as I mentioned, about half way through the night, luckily a nomadic tribe of what could of been students, or at least dodgy Edge types, saved the evening, even if it did mean scrapping the rest of the set!! Plenty of booze, dancing and frivolity was had by all in support, and there went another night, as well as a few more brain cells in the process!

As expected, kicking off 2017 with a sell-out Bowie night, is always going to result in the inevitable come down of the next event, regardless of its theme. The Spiral Scratch was certainly no exception, although timing and lack of cash probably proved to be the killer! But fuck it - myself and those that were kind enough to support the night had a blast, and it was great to hear some of the old bands again. Plus, not even the general population of the pub hassled me to change the music at any time, so I guess people enjoyed it more than they made out!

What a fantastic (decade) night! Definitely on a par with last years tribute night, with The George 2nd being the place to be. Considering the time of year, the support was amazing, and it was great to see everybody getting into the night with such enthusiasm. I'm only sorry I didn't get a chance to mingle more, but DJing can be a harsh mistress! So very special thanks to the G2 staff for all their hard work, Jane for the decorations and cakes, the compliments and praise, and to all of you that made the effort to support the night, especially those that travelled distance. I'm sure we did David proud!
