The Safety Dance Xmas 80s Night 20.12.2019

My final show of 2019, and what a way to bow out. A fantastic crowd, and a very full pub. At one point I even had to leave the pub and walk around the outside to get to the loo, although the bouncer was a bit skeptical of letting me back in! The only annoying part of the evening was my smoke machine dying on me, and the lack of wi-fi in the pub, but luckily there were no requests that I didn't already have. Still, with plenty of cheesy tracks all night, a myriad of requests and a busy dance-floor, the night soon went, and 2am came around all too quickly!

Looking back at the year, it may only tot up to 13 nights, but I still get a great kick every time I'm behind the decks/laptop, and already have some great events lined up for 2020, so with that in mind, I'd like to thank the G2 staff for all their help throughout the year, all those that continue to support my nights, and those that constantly help promote my nights.

And with that, I'm now kicking back for the rest of the year, so I hope you all have a cool Yule, and I'll be back for my opening alternative night in January - "INFERNO" although those that appreciate the nostalgia, Februarys night will be a night dedicated to 1980, so keep watching for your invites.

Dead Ringers 8.10.2019

After a somewhat shaky start with the equipment, and the warning that the trips were going off during a previous night, we kicked off the night to a somewhat busier pub than usual. Bearing in mind this was advertised as the last alternative night, I was a little disappointed at the local support, but luckily fresh blood was available and new friends made, which is more important.

As for the music played, I remember when writing the set I wasn't in the most imaginative mind set, but I was happy on the night with the selection, bringing in more new material from this past years releases including the new 10 000 Russos track obtained at the eleventh hour, plus the requests which actually made for a fuller dance floor than usual, so again, a happy result.

As this was the penultimate night for me, alternative wise, you're gonna have to wait until the end of January now for the next installment (entitled Inferno) but I'll be back at the end of December (20th) for the annual 80s xmas show. I've also more themed nights coming up in 2020, of which seemed have have taken over somewhat this year too (with only 5 alternative nights being hosted in total) so keep watching the skies for more info!)

And as always, a last thank you to those that have stood by me this year and supported the nights, especially to the loyal few that attended every night. See you at Christmas!!

Private 50th Party @ Luton Underground 12.10.2019

After recent great efforts to get involved with the new venue 'Luton Underground' (and failing miserably I might add) ironically, I find myself invited to host a friends private birthday party there. So, once again, the rain continues in Luton to the point I'm looking out for the bearded man in a boat to come sailing past. But luckily, the guests tonight aren't so fickle, and I'm presented with a lively bunch of good time seekers, all out to celebrate their friend and colleagues 50th birthday.

It's been a while since I last hosted such a celebration, and with the previous event being at the G2, as a first time at the venue, its a lot bigger than I'm used to, but with the stage lights glaring, we can see very little throughout the night at the audience anyway! So armed with plenty of requests, we set about to what turned out to be a very enjoyable night. A special thanks to Andy Chesham from Vinyl Revelation for passing over the invitation to host the night.

Frenzy 11.10.2019

Whilst we were getting ready to venture out into the rain, seems like the majority of guests were suffering from bad case of the 'maybes'. Nothing new there I guess, but it's such a shame when a little bit of rain puts people off a free night of great music! But as always, we march ahead because we know a good cause when we hear one, and armed with a great selection of new material, set about entertaining the best way we know how.

So yes, quiet was the way to go until, and ironically our guest DJ had to leave due to jet lag and come 12.30am, all of a sudden, we had a heaving pub, although we certainly had our share of the more 'interesting' of people throughout from the start Was also good to support those that had recent birthdays, plus Pete (Rat) whom was good enough to share his special night with us too. As previously mentioned, I was also dedicating the night to another good friend Drew, that sadly passed recently. This also gave me a great excuse to inflict Laibach and Chumbawamba on an unsuspecting audience.

So with plenty of cider consumed , songs sung louder than necessary, and the odd sporadic bouts of dancing - even from yours truly, we ensured maximum enjoyment with those good enough to support the night and listen to the new songs on offer throughout the night. Many thanks again to our guest DJ Uncle Filthy and the G2 staff.

I'm back for one last night of the alternative in 2019 for our 'Dead Ringers' event on Friday 8th November, so please make a special effort to support the night.

Night Of The Paper Hat 27.9.2019

Obviously somewhat of a different night again for us, but party favours were the theme of the night, and when two good friends have celebrations pretty much on the same night, it just has to happen! So thanks to Tina and Seamus for letting me exploit their yearly increment in what was a great and fun night, even if most of the music was very much on the cheesy side! Certainly great to see so many supporting the event, and keeping the dance floor busy for the majority of the night.

So, after the the recent Queen night, and my recent DJ flirting with the 50s & 60s, we'll be back in a mere two weeks time (11th October), for a night called Frenzy, for what is described as 'the thinking mans alternative night' for those that take their choice of music to the next level. We'll also be joined once again by guest DJ Uncle Filthy, so expect a very heavy night of full on goth, psyche, industrial etc, with plenty of new tunes thrown in for good measure.

Mike's 80th Birthday Bash @ The Leaside 13.9.2019

... and unfortunately, Friday The 13th did indeed strike. At the strike of 12pm, having simply risen to answer the door to the postman, my back decides that I no longer need to be pain-free and out slips my disc. Luckily, an afternoon of motionless, pain killers and the promise of vast amounts of alcohol gives me the desired motivation to continue my enthusiasm for tonight's proceedings. After all, its my Dads 80th birthday party, and after the hours I spent sorting out the music, I'm not missing this for the world!

So yes, another night performing a night of 40s, 50s & early 60s, but I pretty much grew up listening to most of this music, so its not like its a new to me, and there's no denying that the music brought back plenty of childhood memories throughout the night, and from the comments from the majority of my Dad's guests, looks like we hit the spot.

Only 30 minutes short from the allotted playing time before the last guest zimmered off, but with my back, I'd say I was probably the least healthy one there on the night! Still, I loved every minute of it and it was great to see my Dad in his element all night.

Queen - A Night Of Tribute 10.8.2019

As you can imagine, I'm not exactly what you'd call your quintessential Queen fan. In fact, I was asked twice to host this night before I finally accepted the challenge of hosting this night. And as skeptical as I was, once I started to listen to the albums again in preparation, I had to admit to knowing more songs that I expected, which is undoubtedly a repressed memory of when my older sister used to play them back in the day, and I even think I still l have a 7" copy of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" up in my loft!

Weather wise, with the few days leading up to the event being totally barmy (especially for August)  it was a bit touch and go on the night, but by 7pm, the wind had died down, the rain dried up and the sun finally showed up, although I can't help feeling a lot of people probably stayed away just in case! Still, good to see the pub busy on entry, although as usual, it was the hardcore fans that made the night worthwhile, and we certainly had some fun moments throughout the night, so if you did put yourself down as 'interested' on the event page and didn't show up, you certainly missed a fun time.

So many thanks to all those that did support the night - your presence was greatly appreciated, and I can rest assured that I never have to listen to another Queen track again!

We'll be taking a break now but will be back at the end of September (27th) for a 'back to basics' alternative party, so stay well till then!

Vertigo / UK Decay (unofficial) Aftershow Party 19.7.2019

Once again, due to other ideas/commitments, I decided that this was to be the last alternative mix for a few months, and then with the sudden announcement of the mini UK Decay gig at the town hall, decided that a secondary set should be written in the hope that we pick up the slack from the gig. Plus this night also coincided with my 18th anniversary of DJing in Luton, although I decided not to advertise this time as I didn't fancy setting myself up for the standard disappointment! After a quick tot-up of events from the past, I also concluded that I've covered about 200 nights at The George II.

With the crap weather throughout the day, luckily myself and my DJ partner in crime, Uncle Filthy, played to a busy and friendly crowd for the best part of the night, and it was great to see so many people that haven't graced our doors for quite some time. I still managed to fit in quite a bit of my original set, but was very pleased to be able include some classics from the late 70s, rarely heard these days. I was also planning to take a few pics, but spent my free time busy catching up, so my cider addled brain will just have to try and remember the night on it's own!

So, thanks to all that supported, and came back to the pub after the gig, and hope we see you again on our next adventure into musical weirdsville - keep watching the skies!

The Obsolete Man 21.6.2019

I guess the interim choice of title for this event was pretty apt in the end, although when I mentioned that we'd be celebrating the summer solstice, I'd never envisioned that the an actual witches gathering would be the end result! Regardless, armed with material from all the current new releases, Ralph & I set about entertaining those that did venture out, although with Fridays being pretty dead in the town most weekends, it's such a tragedy that the alternative crowd aren't jumping on this opportunity to take back the pub and make it ours again.

With posts about bands not getting support, it does also happens quite often with DJ nights, of which are just as important with getting new music heard, and whilst you may look at the final play list and consider it may be limited, we always play to the audience, so ultimately, its up to you to change that if you want to experience a difference.

Ironically, I was informed towards the end of the night, that G2 was in fact the busiest pub on the night compared to other locals, and we also had some pleasant feedback which is always appreciated.

So moaning aside, a very big thanks to those that continue to support the arts (!) especially to our guest DJ Uncle Filthy, whom will be joining us again next month, where we hope to get in on the aftermath of the "People Power Passion/UK Decay performance" during our 'Vertigo' event.  Remember, word of mouth is the always the best form of advertising, so please help us spread the word before nothing becomes the norm.

It's Cold Outside 17.5.2019

With a rushed start, a few complaints about the selection of music from the proles, regardless that the night has been advertised for a month, and with some confusion as to what was musically expected, I guess the night went OK in the end. As you may be able to gather from the below set, I didn't really get to play much of what I was hoping for, and ended up having to engage 'generic DJ mode' for the last half of the night, but I suppose you can't complain about a busy dance-floor!

Regardless, G2 is now pretty much sorted with its decor, and with the installation of new stage lights and new speakers, and the fact they can now turn the main lights off, the venue is again, a pleasure to DJ in, and I look forward to my next event in June. So many thanks to those that supported the night, those that traveled, Russ again for sound duties and Maureen for the lifts.

So next month, I will be joined once again by guest DJ Uncle Filthy for our first full-on alternative night since last November entitled "The Obsolete Man", where, hopefully with a strong support, we can provide the town with a night of great and eclectic music!

Promised You A Miracle 19.4.2019

Another long gap since the last musical outing, and with the pubs recent shutdown for its long overdue refurb, a fairly tentative return considering the newly promised PA system was not yet ready for use. In fact, the pub was only running at 90% with a few more things to tweak, so in theory, next months 'Numan' night should be fully functional. Yes, there were a few annoying aspects, but these are small potatoes when you consider we still have a pub to run such nights, and for that I'm very grateful.

Anyway, another Easter themed night written into the history books with a great many people enjoying the musical delights from the best decade, and with a great many requests to boot ensuring a perfect night of dancing and boozing! Many thanks to Russ again for help with the sound and to all that helped make the night fun to play.

As I mentioned, we're back on Friday 17th May to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the eclectic 'Are Friends Electric/Replicas' release, with a great mix of music from '79, plus a great industrial/electronic mix throughout, so make sure you put the night in your calendar.

How Soon Is Now - 22.2.2019

First off, many thanks to all that helped share the event and invite friends via Facebook. I do believe it actually made a (slight) difference with various people I'd ordinarily not see out at my nights, although the "interested" list proved its usual failure again! Anyway, a full-on indie selection was originally planned, but with two friends birthdays in the mix, especially Ralphs 50th, it was always going to be a hit-and-miss night musically, and with the recent nightmare of the big crash the week before, I must say the night was a tentative one for me throughout. Thankfully, the night ran smoothly, with a good range of requests, apart from the odd arsehole, but that's the joys of playing to the public! Also a shame to see a lack of people helping support the birthday bunnies, but I guess that's the way things are going these days.

So many thanks for those that did venture out and help the night go well, and of course thanks to Russ for the sound tweaking, and Maureen for the roadie duties! As for me, I'm taking a bit of a DJ rest for some much needed self indulgence so keep an eye out for the April Bank holiday 80s night. (The event page is already live btw, so you don't need to wait for me to invite you!)

Crash Course For The Ravers - 26.1.2019

As so famously quoted "consistency being the last refuge of the unimaginative" (thanks Oscar) the third and last retrospective tribute to the late great David Bowie was performed over the weekend. It'd been a long ride since the last event back in Jan 2017, and although we had a few negative aspects against us, what with the pub moving the initial booking from the official Bowie weekend for a Polish charity event and the annoying act of some c*** ripping down the main (and expensive) poster, which was only discovered missing by myself and Sharon walking past the pub the Sunday night before. Luckily, we had some smaller posters available to replace it, yet bafflingly I found the big poster rolled up behind the bar in the wine storage rack of the pub on the night, so why it wasn't simply replaced is beyond me!

Regardless, with the 27 album back catalogue available to play, an earlier start than normal was advertised and we kicked off this grand event to pretty much an empty pub which was a shame as I remember the last two events actually having fans already gathered in anticipation, so you can imagine our disappointment. After a frantic search for the decorations left by Jane, we quickly stuck up the stars with seconds to spare, and started the music. After two hours of great music and tumbleweeds, my partner in crime had left in frustration, but by 11pm, all of a sudden it was 4 people deep at the bar, and the night magically came alive. Although it was a bit of a shocker to see an empty dancefloor to Ziggy Stardust, but Rebel Rebel & Kooks brought people back to a relatively busy dancefloor for the duration, but still nothing like the two past events. Still, we all sang our hearts out and made the most of our night and I suppose that's all that matters.

So a very big thank you to the loyal Bowie fans that ventured out and supported the night, those that help share the Facebook event, Jane for the invitation list and decorations, and the G2 for the chance to host the night one last time. As I mention, I seriously doubt another main tribute night will happen again, but with so many albums from David Bowie's back catalogue, there's always room for specific anniversary nights in the future. Remember "Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming."(David Bowie)
