70s Heaven...And A Lot More Hell - 19.12.2015

A fantastic night all round and so good to see the George 2nd crowd really getting into the festive/70s spirit, with plenty of requests throughout and a good dancing crowd to set the fun in full swing.

Again, I must say a big thank you to Ali & Eric for putting up with me throughout 2015, and to the bar staff for their hard work, as well as the great support I've received during the year. I'm sure to return in 2016 for more 'Dark Night In Luton' events as well as a few themed nights, inspiration pending!!

BONUS Dark Night In Luton - 4.12.2015

With my last scheduled night in November advertised as my last Dark Night, I was pleased to get this bonus night at the last minute. Early Christmas parties and the like aside, the pub was pretty busy throughout the night, although you can tell the lack of 'alternative' people towards the end of the night by the requests!! Still, entertain those that show and keep your head down and hope that nobody complains!! All's well that ends well, and a fun night was had. This was definitely my last Dark Night of 2015 though, but I've still got the 70s Heaven night to look forward to on the 19th.

Dark Night In Luton - Friday 13th Special (13.11.2015)

So many thanks that supported the last Dark Night of 2015, and celebration of Vanda​s birthday. Surprising to see the pub so quiet of a Friday night, but that did mean I could actually play what I had originally intended, so I'm not complaining (too much!)

I've no immediate plans for 2016 at present, but I'm sure inspiration will take hold sooner than later. In the meantime, I'll be playing one more night at G2 on Saturday 19th December hosting another 70s Heaven...And A Lot More Hell!!​ event, so I hope to see some of you at that.

Dark Night In Luton feat guest DJ Uncle Filthy 16.10.2015

Our penultimate night of 2015, and what a great one. Packed pub pretty much all night, no complaints about the music and limited requests, which meant Ralph & I could just get on with it!! Playing a few newer tracks to boot from PIL, Iamx and New Order that all seem to go down well, and entertaining a surprising amount of Castle folk towards the end of the night, so a good night all round. Many thanks to those few from the group that did support the night, although the two birthday parties on the night really did save the day if I'm honest, and of course, special thanks to DJ Ralph Uncle Filthy for his tireless contribution.

Dark Night In Luton Classic Album 30th Anniversary Special - The Cult - Love

The last 30th anniversary special for Dark Night in Luton, and I admit, my favourite album of 1985. I can't believe that 30 years have passed since I original purchased this seminal album, and to how much it steered my musical direction as a 17 years old at the time. Its a shame Astbury had to turn into such a dick!

Still, a good start to the night with some friends I haven't see for a while, and all requesting some great songs. As for the middle of the night requests, they were all via some weirdo drunken hick family whom all coincidentally shared the same birthday on the exact same night, two of which were meant to be twins (obvious removed at birth!) Wasn't a full moon on Friday was it?

Regardless, after the idiots left, the night continued in good stead with more great songs to boot, with a bit of a panic from me trying to fit in the rest of the 'Love' album in its entirety! So thanks to those that managed to make the night, although I cant help but mention again, the more people we get, the better chance I get to steer the music towards the weird.

My theme for the night was thwarted within the playing of my first song, but that's the joy of playing pubs! Still, it was nice to see the locals getting into the night, and some new faces that certainly know their music. I reckon we had about a fifth of the actual Dark Night group in attendance, and with a few at Sacrosanct, and the end of the month combined, all in all, the turn out was good and it ended up being a really fun night. 70s Heaven...and Hell

Six months in the waiting, and the night finally arrived. I don't think I've been this anxious since my club days, but the pub seemed to just about hold its own with a steady flow throughout the night. I exhausted every avenue I could to advertise this night, bar walking round town with a placard, so was pleased with the numbers in the end. A fun night all round, and only a couple of songs missing from my original playlist! Many thanks for those that supported, made requests and even danced! I did think at one stage the night was a bit empty, but with the good beautiful weather being so rare this year, I didn't blame people for staying in the garden!! Regardless, a really good support, and from people I haven't seen for a while as well as the usual suspects, so thanks again to you.

Dark Night In Luton 'Empires And Dance' Special

A totally splendiferous night from start to finish. Plenty of friends, old and new, good pub support and a cracking night of music, and the most important aspect for me - the renewal of Strongbow on the pumps!! Due to the sudden flurry of dancing and requests part mid-way through the night, I only just managed to fit in the whole of the 'Empires And Dance' album by the end of the night. Considering the dreadful weather and the classic anecdote of "rain stopped play" Damned Night In Luton was a pretty good ride. I think I may of missed one of two numbers out from the albums extras, but nobody complained at the time, so what the heck! I had bumped into a few people the next day that weren't aware that the night was on, so please help me out by spreading the event info around and letting friends know, even if you cant make the night yourself. Considering the many different musical events in Luton this particular evening, Dark Night didn't do too badly on the whole. As published, we carried on playing till past 2am, basically ended up with the busier side of pumpkin time, with guest DJ Ralph filling the (in) appropriate gaps throughout the night. Great to see those that came after the other events, especially the S.W.A.N.K. boys and girls!

The Return of Dark Night In Luton - 1st May 2015

After the last minute cancellation of Aprils Dark Nights, leaving Luton aimless in its alternative music variety, it was great to return once again to perform my DJ duties. And with the UK Subs/Hazard gig across the road, upon my arrival at the pub, there seemed no time to lose with plenty of people to entertain. As most of you know, I was also armed with my laptop for the first time and it was definitely a work in progress, but the learning curve had to be a short one, and apart from a a couple of hiccups, all went well. Nobody seemed to notice the smooth transaction between DJs Chris & I, regardless that we were in fact one lead short and had to share speaker access!

As for the music, it couldn't of been more further than I originally aimed going to play. Over recent months, I really have pushed the boundaries during the shows, but tonight obviously wasn't going to be one of those nights, with a strictly crowd based set, as you can see filled with requests, so we must of been doing something right!!

So thank you all very much for supporting the night and to my guest DJ Gothydude for his input. Dark Night hopes to return sometime in June, so keep checking the main site for details and the pub walls!!

Dark Night In Luton - The Black Book Edition 2.4.2015

A rare night of Coven club classics, although I must admit to feeling somewhat trepid regarding the nights music ahead, and wondered whether I should of just stuck to a usual eclectic Dark Night mix. Still, regardless that there was a disturbing lack of ex-Willing Sinners out taking advantage, support for the night was OK, and the music seemed to go down well considering the industrial played and the usual pub crowd.

100th Dark Night In Luton 26.3.2015

So, 100 nights in the bag, and a second night of a classic album, as per the requested Placebo night. Although I was still feeling rough, I managed to collect my gear and head down to G2, and I'm glad I did make the effort as it was certainly a busier night than usual, although we did kind of peak around the 11pm mark, and as you can see by the final stages of the set list, I did tend start waning and pushed for a more heavier close.

Dark Psych In Luton 19.3.2015

Unfortunately I, like so many others at this time, have succumbed to the dreaded cold virus that is spreading across the UK, so I really wasn't in the mood for anything, let alone a night of DJing. But the show must go on, and cancelling the night at such short notice would of just been rude imo, especially with this particular night being sadly the last one that guest Lee can currently do, at least till autumn. So in my dazed state, being unable to talk and hardly swallow, I sought for a night of medicinal liquids, and a half in/half out state of musical consciousness!

I had to say I was greatly surprised at the support we received from the group (especially as the passing trade seem to have dissipated these last night weeks) and pretty much everyone said they're enjoyed the music. Just ironic that this was the last full show, but I've enjoyed adding psych to the my usual sets these past few months, so don't worry, you'll still get to hear it on occasion.

As per usual, guest Lee played a great selection, all very carefully selected and well mixed together, together with the mind numbing strobes although I must admit to having to turn the off  the lights during my last set of the night, as it was really messing with my already fucked head, plus also for not bringing my own bits and pieces down, and cutting short my last two songs so I could get home to bed asap!

So thank you to everyone that supported last night, and to Lee for the past 6 psych shows. He's introduced me to so much new music over the last 9 months, and been an inspiration and joy to have DJing at Dark Night and we hope its not too long before we see him back at the controls again.

As I previously mentioned, DJ Uncle Filthy is currently in training for his guest DJ slot at Whitby's 'Sexy Sunday' at the end of April, hence the 99% coverage of goth music he played, and certainly not the usual eclectic mix that we're used to, but that did give me the chance to really get as many genres in as possible throughout this night, including a last minute tribute to the 30th anniversary of The Sisters Of Mercy's 'First And Last And Always' album (which really had to be done!) Dark Night In Luton Classic Album Special "Bauhaus - The Sky's Gone Out" - 5.3.2015

So, the first in what may become a line of 'classic album' nights for Dark Night In Luton, although I do however believe my choice was somewhat overly niche compared to usual crowd that now accumulate at my nights. Still, somebodies got to do it, and all in all, 'The Sky's Gone Out' is still one hell of an album, even 33 years on! My only annoyance was that I picked up my Canadian release of the album to play, which although has extra tracks, just not quite as many as required for my needs compared to the UK release, so I missed out playing several B-sides towards the end of the night, but hey, there's plenty more nights ahead eh!

Anyway, many thanks to the crowd that ventured over from the Hat Factory after their comedy event, and to the few from the main group, as it turned into a very busy night.  I also got to meet Andrew O'Neil, guitarist for the steam-punk band "The Men That Would Not Be Blamed For Nothing" (hence the Creaming Jesus request!) So many thanks to all that supported the night. The next classic album featured will be requested Simple Minds "Empires And Dance" on Thursday 23rd April.

Dark Night In Luton - The Apocalypse Has Now Begun 26.2.2015

Originally, my sets were written specifically for DJ Antony 'El Beardo''s birthday event for last year, but as plans for that had gone tits up, inviting him to play 'The Apocalypse Has Now Begun' was perfect for what I wanted to do achieve for this particular themed night. Bit of a slow start, and I assume that the end of the month syndrome affected a few people, but by the end, we had a fair few bodies out. There wasn't anything that Ant played that I didn't like, and I totally welcomed the style to which the music suited Dark Nights agenda of different. I thoroughly suggest intrigue take you to Youtube to investigate further, although hearing the music loud and in a social grace will not be quite the same experience! Still, never fear as we welcome 'El Beardo' into the fold of guest DJs for future events to come, so keep watching the skies!
