Vertigo / UK Decay (unofficial) Aftershow Party 19.7.2019

Once again, due to other ideas/commitments, I decided that this was to be the last alternative mix for a few months, and then with the sudden announcement of the mini UK Decay gig at the town hall, decided that a secondary set should be written in the hope that we pick up the slack from the gig. Plus this night also coincided with my 18th anniversary of DJing in Luton, although I decided not to advertise this time as I didn't fancy setting myself up for the standard disappointment! After a quick tot-up of events from the past, I also concluded that I've covered about 200 nights at The George II.

With the crap weather throughout the day, luckily myself and my DJ partner in crime, Uncle Filthy, played to a busy and friendly crowd for the best part of the night, and it was great to see so many people that haven't graced our doors for quite some time. I still managed to fit in quite a bit of my original set, but was very pleased to be able include some classics from the late 70s, rarely heard these days. I was also planning to take a few pics, but spent my free time busy catching up, so my cider addled brain will just have to try and remember the night on it's own!

So, thanks to all that supported, and came back to the pub after the gig, and hope we see you again on our next adventure into musical weirdsville - keep watching the skies!

The Obsolete Man 21.6.2019

I guess the interim choice of title for this event was pretty apt in the end, although when I mentioned that we'd be celebrating the summer solstice, I'd never envisioned that the an actual witches gathering would be the end result! Regardless, armed with material from all the current new releases, Ralph & I set about entertaining those that did venture out, although with Fridays being pretty dead in the town most weekends, it's such a tragedy that the alternative crowd aren't jumping on this opportunity to take back the pub and make it ours again.

With posts about bands not getting support, it does also happens quite often with DJ nights, of which are just as important with getting new music heard, and whilst you may look at the final play list and consider it may be limited, we always play to the audience, so ultimately, its up to you to change that if you want to experience a difference.

Ironically, I was informed towards the end of the night, that G2 was in fact the busiest pub on the night compared to other locals, and we also had some pleasant feedback which is always appreciated.

So moaning aside, a very big thanks to those that continue to support the arts (!) especially to our guest DJ Uncle Filthy, whom will be joining us again next month, where we hope to get in on the aftermath of the "People Power Passion/UK Decay performance" during our 'Vertigo' event.  Remember, word of mouth is the always the best form of advertising, so please help us spread the word before nothing becomes the norm.

It's Cold Outside 17.5.2019

With a rushed start, a few complaints about the selection of music from the proles, regardless that the night has been advertised for a month, and with some confusion as to what was musically expected, I guess the night went OK in the end. As you may be able to gather from the below set, I didn't really get to play much of what I was hoping for, and ended up having to engage 'generic DJ mode' for the last half of the night, but I suppose you can't complain about a busy dance-floor!

Regardless, G2 is now pretty much sorted with its decor, and with the installation of new stage lights and new speakers, and the fact they can now turn the main lights off, the venue is again, a pleasure to DJ in, and I look forward to my next event in June. So many thanks to those that supported the night, those that traveled, Russ again for sound duties and Maureen for the lifts.

So next month, I will be joined once again by guest DJ Uncle Filthy for our first full-on alternative night since last November entitled "The Obsolete Man", where, hopefully with a strong support, we can provide the town with a night of great and eclectic music!

Promised You A Miracle 19.4.2019

Another long gap since the last musical outing, and with the pubs recent shutdown for its long overdue refurb, a fairly tentative return considering the newly promised PA system was not yet ready for use. In fact, the pub was only running at 90% with a few more things to tweak, so in theory, next months 'Numan' night should be fully functional. Yes, there were a few annoying aspects, but these are small potatoes when you consider we still have a pub to run such nights, and for that I'm very grateful.

Anyway, another Easter themed night written into the history books with a great many people enjoying the musical delights from the best decade, and with a great many requests to boot ensuring a perfect night of dancing and boozing! Many thanks to Russ again for help with the sound and to all that helped make the night fun to play.

As I mentioned, we're back on Friday 17th May to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the eclectic 'Are Friends Electric/Replicas' release, with a great mix of music from '79, plus a great industrial/electronic mix throughout, so make sure you put the night in your calendar.

How Soon Is Now - 22.2.2019

First off, many thanks to all that helped share the event and invite friends via Facebook. I do believe it actually made a (slight) difference with various people I'd ordinarily not see out at my nights, although the "interested" list proved its usual failure again! Anyway, a full-on indie selection was originally planned, but with two friends birthdays in the mix, especially Ralphs 50th, it was always going to be a hit-and-miss night musically, and with the recent nightmare of the big crash the week before, I must say the night was a tentative one for me throughout. Thankfully, the night ran smoothly, with a good range of requests, apart from the odd arsehole, but that's the joys of playing to the public! Also a shame to see a lack of people helping support the birthday bunnies, but I guess that's the way things are going these days.

So many thanks for those that did venture out and help the night go well, and of course thanks to Russ for the sound tweaking, and Maureen for the roadie duties! As for me, I'm taking a bit of a DJ rest for some much needed self indulgence so keep an eye out for the April Bank holiday 80s night. (The event page is already live btw, so you don't need to wait for me to invite you!)

Crash Course For The Ravers - 26.1.2019

As so famously quoted "consistency being the last refuge of the unimaginative" (thanks Oscar) the third and last retrospective tribute to the late great David Bowie was performed over the weekend. It'd been a long ride since the last event back in Jan 2017, and although we had a few negative aspects against us, what with the pub moving the initial booking from the official Bowie weekend for a Polish charity event and the annoying act of some c*** ripping down the main (and expensive) poster, which was only discovered missing by myself and Sharon walking past the pub the Sunday night before. Luckily, we had some smaller posters available to replace it, yet bafflingly I found the big poster rolled up behind the bar in the wine storage rack of the pub on the night, so why it wasn't simply replaced is beyond me!

Regardless, with the 27 album back catalogue available to play, an earlier start than normal was advertised and we kicked off this grand event to pretty much an empty pub which was a shame as I remember the last two events actually having fans already gathered in anticipation, so you can imagine our disappointment. After a frantic search for the decorations left by Jane, we quickly stuck up the stars with seconds to spare, and started the music. After two hours of great music and tumbleweeds, my partner in crime had left in frustration, but by 11pm, all of a sudden it was 4 people deep at the bar, and the night magically came alive. Although it was a bit of a shocker to see an empty dancefloor to Ziggy Stardust, but Rebel Rebel & Kooks brought people back to a relatively busy dancefloor for the duration, but still nothing like the two past events. Still, we all sang our hearts out and made the most of our night and I suppose that's all that matters.

So a very big thank you to the loyal Bowie fans that ventured out and supported the night, those that help share the Facebook event, Jane for the invitation list and decorations, and the G2 for the chance to host the night one last time. As I mention, I seriously doubt another main tribute night will happen again, but with so many albums from David Bowie's back catalogue, there's always room for specific anniversary nights in the future. Remember "Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming."(David Bowie)

Friday Night Fever! - 21.12.2018

"Music from the dreadful days of disco, dinosaurs of rock, glitter of glam, nuance of new-wave and the perniciousness of punk!!" - and with the perfect target audience and the high spirits of the festive season, I couldn't of asked for a better finish to 2018. A full pub from the start, non-stop dancing, and the beer flowed and flowed!!

So that's it for me now, and I can put this year to bed with another 14 nights (listed below) under my belt. Looking back at the year, seems that the most popular were the themed nights, with the 'Friday Alternative' nights falling victim to the ghost town element of the state of entertainment for the town centre these days. Still, we are the only alternative night still running, so hopefully 2019 will prove worthy of my continued efforts, but I guess time will tell.

2018 - January Embers / What Time Is Love? / Repulsion / Disturbia / X-The Unknown / Baggy Trousers 80s Night / Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores / Friday The 13th - Sixteen Years of a Dark Luton / Fear & Loathing / Seconds / Methods Of Dance Alt 80s Night / Indrid Cold / Entertainment Through Pain & Friday Night Fever! - How many did you do !?!

So all that's left to do is to thank all the staff of The George 2nd and those that have been loyal to the cause throughout the year. We return Saturday 26th January for the third 'Bowie Tribute Night' so keep watching your invite pages for future events.
