The End Of An Error!

So there we go. My contracted reign at the Hat Factory comes to an end. Now its time to give my poor hearing a well deserved rest, although as I mentioned in an earlier FB post, the future is always unwritten and I'm sure more opportunities will become available before I'm fully put out to pasture, but for the time being, I've definitely had enough (again.)

As for the night in question, pleased to see more people out, and thoroughly enjoying the music and dancing right till the end of the night. Also a rarity in that we actually reached the 1am finish after my last few events having to close early due to lack of people! A classic quote from Blanche Dubois comes to mind as in "I have always relied on the kindness of strangers" as for this round of nights, I was trying my best not to rely on my ever declining friends list, esepcailly as the average quote seems to be "I'm too old for clubbing" seems to be cropping up more and more these days! Plus trying to play a bit more of a wider selection, even delving more into the commercial side, which is a shame as I still have plenty of great themed sets previously written and ready to go, but alas, I believe that Luton really is at its lowest peak for nightlife, plus I've already enquired into other venues, and they all echo the same.

Still, as another good friend put it. at least I made the effort and put some nights on, got to see people that I invariably rarely see these days, and played some great music in the process. I don't think people really realise how important these nights really are until its too late.

So, with thanks as always to those that have supported my five themed nights. Plus a special thanks to Vinyl Revelations and Monstera Canteen for taking my fliers and posters. keep watching the skies!

Darkside Of The 80s 1st February 2025

Another night done and dusted, even if it was a bit of a short one. Support coming from Flitwick, Dunstable, Camden, Kempston & Waltham Cross, but unfortunately, the only positive spin I can put on the night was a that at least we generated one more person than at the last supper! Yes, indeed a perfect number for a Coven, ironically considering this was the most gothy night I was running in my 4 night stint. Still, it is what it is. One more night left, and hopefully our side of the planet will warm up a enough to ecourage people to venture out of their habitats once again!

So many thanks to the lucky few that supported the night. Your presence means the world to me.

Bang-A-Gong 1970-1977 Special 14th December 2024

Well, I'll spare you the horrors I had to go through when arriving at the venue at 7pm, where we only just managed to get the night ready in time. Needless to say, most of you noted, we had to change rooms at the last minute, but I know some of you prefer the Basement 1 anyway!

Regardless of the chaos and the cold, and like the previous Ghostbusters event, support was still very low, but to be honest, the room was filled with friends, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the night, catching up with old friends, plenty of dancing, and guests thanking me for such a wide selection of the genre. Plus it was also my birthday celebration so who could want for more. I did note back on my 50th never to celebrate again in public, but this was more coincidence than planned, so thought it best to run with it.

So again, thank you all so much that attended my last night of the year - your support means so much to me. I wish you all a very happy Christmas and blessed new year 🎅.

I'm due back on the 32nd day of the Gregorian calendar, or 1st February to you, hosting another 'Kick Up The 80s' style night entitled "The Dark 80s" as it currently reads more like an old 80s goth night!!

Ghostbusters 1984 Special 30.11.2024

OK, first off, a very big thank you to all that made the effort to help support the night. As we all know, Luton town centre is very much a dead loss these days, so running these nights is very much a gamble, but the show must go on. Regardless, I counted people from Southampton, St. Neots, Waltham Cross, Dunstable, Silsoe and of course, Luton, even if the night was unusually quiet in itself. Still, 7.30pm kicked of my extra added mini-goth set to a very pretty room. Btw, lessons learn on the night - no more balloons. I had intended to buy more for the pending 70s night, but afraid we might instil a few heart seizures, and with the defibrillator upstairs and outside, best not to chance it, especailly as I'm looking for an older audience!!

As per usual, didnt get a chance to play everything I wanted, although I still draw the line at repeating songs because people have missed them due to deciding to pop to another venue. Snooze, you lose as they say!

After all the time spent fliering, and visiting other venues and gigs, worf of mouth is still the best method of advertising, so please make sure you tell your friends about the pending nights, as after all, we put these nights on for you. I had some very lovely comments from people on the night and the day after, and I appreciate the effort people make, and I although Decembers night is only my third at the venue, I certainly hope to go out with a bang for my 'Bang-A-Gong 1970-77 Special' so please help and spread the good word.

The Mr. And Mrs Chalkley At Pendley Manor 27th September 2024

It would only be for friends that I would indulge in such revelry, but to be invited to anyone’s wedding, let alone perform music for their special day is always a total honour in my opinion.

After a brief meeting which now seems like months ago, the groom and I discussed background and expectations, especially with my regard to ensure the knowledge that this was my first wedding gig.

More months of waiting for the guests to select favourite songs as well as the ‘must plays’ on the night by the bride and groom, certainly was an anxious time for me. When I first met Jeff and Julia in March, I was DJing goth/industrial , 80s and Ska, so when the set of 70s soul and funk arrived as well as more commercial modern tunes arrived, I was a bit shocked! Talk about being out of my comfort zone! Still, keeping the party happy was my prime concern and a great night was had by all.

Plus I got to work with the band “Fishing For Robots” once more, and having spent most of the day with them at the wedding, was great to get to know them all better and I’m hoping more dates will come of it too.

So after a delayed start, I did actually lose about an hours worth of playing time in order to get the band on at the allotted time, but no one was bothered, and the night went without a hitch, although my laptop froze before I could do my soundcheck which was a scary few minutes, especially after I’d originally turned it on earlier to warm up. Bloody technology!

A Kick Up The 80s - 13.7.2024

So, after a thirteen year break, I find myself back in the room I originally started in back in 2006! As some of you know, I was hoping to get the main room, but due to disappointing advance ticket sales, the event was moved downstairs, although that worked to our advantage, and to a degree, it was kinda nice being back ’home’!

So set up was very easy, thanks to the efficient techs at the venue, and I was pretty much left to my own devices. No surprise that the first hour was pretty slow, although I got to play more of the alternative selection I originally based the night on plus we did have people dancing immediately, but hitting our peek and having a full dance floor was just an excellent experience. I guess with hosting the night around this time of year is always going to be problematic, and for someone who has no interested in sports, having the football on doesn’t help either! But hell, we all had a great night, and that’s all that matters.

So thanks to all that made the effort, especially those that travelled from Guildford, Corby and London. You’re dedication to my nights is fully appreciated.

Micks 60th 23.3.2024

So once more, the laptop comes out of retirement, and another set is released into the wild. This time, for my good friend Mick, with an added incentive of having the brilliant "Fishing For Robots" playing too. It was great to finally work with these guys having seen them play so many times over the past twelve months, and I fully appreciated running my decks through their PA.

So musically, the set had gone through some drastic changes since its birth, including bands such as Skinny Puppy, D.A.F. and The Normal etc, but as time gets closer, finding out the bands set, running times, plus the fact there are kids and families, the final set including Micks Ska and 60s requests ended up pretty well imo. Good crowd throughout the night, plenty of dancing, plus making new friends alway equates to a good night out. Oh, and plenty of cider too ;)

Cerberfest IVX 1.7.2023

OK, first real DJ event for me since January. Certainly not my usual style of event, but it was good to get back out there again, plus this time, it was all for charity. Also good for me to play material I rarely get to play, and while a majority of the sets were played to somewhat quieter audience numbers due to the heat and in between the bands, I certainly hope those that heard the sets enjoyed them. Cheers to Chris Cummins for letting me join in the festivities.

The 60th Wedding Anniversary Bash (Private Party)

So going back to the 13th April 1963. My parents tied the knot, and 60 years later, managed to notch up their diamond anniversary (although I saw no signs of any precious stones exchanging hands!) I was so proud to be part of their special event, happily performing DJ duties once more at The Leaside Hotel in Luton. Armed with just my laptop, and the venues own bluetooth speaker, we whipped up a storm with the showcase of playing music in the order of 1959. 60, 61, 62, 63 (x2), 64 and the odd one from 1965 to make up the numbers, which worked well for the majority of the night. Considering too that the average age must have been 75+, good to see a well attended night and I received so many compliments regarding the music played. Job well done I do believe!

CerberStacks, Dois Padres & DJ Russ at the 'Orse! 14.1.2023

My first venture of the new year, with great thanks to Cerberstacks for their very kind offer to host the DJ duties. I haven't actually DJed at the 'House since May 2017, and considering I used to run my Thursday Fury nights there, it still feels odd to return to my old local after all these years. But this is the closest thing I have to a friendly local now, so expect to see me in there a bit more often!

Anyway, tonight gave me the chance to play tracks I haven't touched since my last Whitby horrorpunk appearance back in Halloween 2009, mixed in with extra garage 60s and psyche. Also playing around Dois Padres and Cerberstacks served up what turned out to be a great evenings entertainment including a great bonus for me in meeting friends and an old flame I haven't seen in 25 years+!

So thanks to all involved, especially Matt for the necessary DI box!!

Armagideon Times 11.11.2022

"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it"

So did anyone else that attended get the relevance of the title of the night? Coincidence? Fate? Who knows. All I can tell you is, this is certainly not the first time Greene King has fucked over its punters and entertainers by putting ignorant landlords into a pub with such a strong history, and if the sub heading is anything to go by, doubt it'll be the last.

So, musically, somewhat of a departure for me, but surely another string to my bow (?) and after having the original date scrubbed due to Covid, this was my best chance to play this set. Unfortunately, the new landlords had other ideas. Welcome to Friday nights in Luton!

With no passing trade, and very little to even venture into Luton for these days (so God bless Andy Chesham for his continuing nights at THF.) But they, I'm professional right? 20 years under my belt, I can read a crowd well and I'm also open to requests and obviously had a very good idea whom would be attending (hence the event anyway!) Yet I still had praise and people dancing from what few people were in the pub. Even if you only please that one person, its never a waste of your time.

But what is a waste of my time is being constantly told the new landlords don't appreciate what I'm playing and insist I start playing 80s. Hello - have you seen who's in your pub? I even get blamed for people leaving throughout the early part of the night. Nothing to do with the fact your bar is very poorly stocked, and you've put out those god damn uncomfortable chairs that the previous tenants have been trying to sell for over 12 months!!

Well, after four arguments with the power tripping landlords daughter, I've had enough, close it down, pick up my posters, inform the supporting punters and walk, leaving them with no entertainment, and an even emptier pub. I think their line "We own this pub. We didn't book you.' Do what we tell you" was the clincher. I gave up trying to explain I was trying to help them make money, but they obviously know better. Last time I'll drink or entertain in there whilst its under its present occupancy. Think you know better than me? Fucking good luck to you - you're gonna need it. As most of you know, it took a lot of courage for me to do the night considering my recent past, but that's me done now until the landlords are replaced.(Apparently their last straw was the 'house' music I was playing. That was the Killing Joke track. Think that says it all!)

1982 - The 40th Anniversary Special 13.8.2022

The finale descends, and instead of going off with a bang, thanks to the clapped out equipment at the pub, the music barely lifts any spirits and we’re playing through only one speaker! Thankfully, our god of tech, Russ manages to pinpoint the problem to the amp, although we’ve struggled with the dodgy mixer for years, and after plenty of tweaking finally we’re underway at full blast. Luckily, the earlier start was a good move!

Annoyances aside, I was so pleased to see so many people supporting my night, many I haven’t seen for years regardless of Covid! We had also drawn more of a crowd than for my recent anniversary event, and considering it was still 30° the pub itself when we started the crowds were on a par with the gathering masses outside. Usual dodgy requests throughout the night, but I remained adamant that I stick to my original plan of 1982. But plenty of compliments throughout the night, and even dancing towards the end. Hell, it was too hot for the better part of the night anyway, and I was fully expecting to be playing to an empty room considering the heat, so all’s well that ends well!

So I’ve now 191 nights under my belt at The George 2nd, and hopefully more to come in the future, although time will tell. I’ve still loads of ideas, prewritten sets and designed posters ready at my fingertips, all waiting for a bid to be played – just need the venue. When I originally wrote and booked the night, I had no idea it was to be my last, so here’s hoping that Greene King doesn’t fuck with the already proved formulae. Keep watching the skies people, and obviously a great big thank you to all your loyal support over the years.

20 Years Of Dark Night In Luton 23.7.2022

First off, as with all my past events, I was overwhelmed at the support showed, especially at those that travelled a distance to support me, and as always, I thank you very much for your efforts, with a special thanks to Russ for making the nights sound so good!

Looking back, July 2018 was my last DJ anniversary set, celebrating 16 years at the time. I didn’t even acknowledge 2019, and obviously we lost 2020/2021, and ironically, I was trying to do back then what I was trying to achieve again this time and I’d even written myself a warning in my review of the night telling myself not to try again! My efforts to spread the word through local media failed, with 3CR ignoring all my messages, and even mp Rachel Hopkins, commended by myself for her acknowledgement of small businesses around the town, failed to reply, preferring to attend ‘Afrofest’ for her own political ends no doubt!

So with my return from a weeks break in Devon the day before, there was no build up for me for the event, which was definitely strange, but any excuse to dig out those old goth club hits once more to an understanding audience, even if ‘hot night syndrome’ was in full force, pushing the majority of people outside for the better part of the night.

As it was also such a milestone event, I’d gone through many past Coven pictures to try and rekindle past friendships to those that faded away after the closure of The Coven, but many didn’t bite or turn up, so I spent the night taking out those songs I’d especially included to a more receptive crowd. Weirdly enough, there were plenty of songs I sadly never got around to play (Merry Thoughts, Star Industry, Sheep On Drugs etc) yet ended up playing more that I hadn’t heard in years, especially towards the end of the night.

And lastly, as I also mentioned in my recent adverts, this was my 190th event at The George 2nd, and I only have one more night currently booked in August before our friendly landlord Eric hands back the keys back to Greene King in mid September. Heaven knows what will happen to the pub after this, especially with GKs past total mismanagement and failures, so support the pub while you can.

God Save The Queen - The Anti-Jubilee Special @ G2 4.6.2022

So let's try and capture the mood. So whilst the majority of the brainwashed, moronic public blindly celebrate our pointless and outdated monarch, whom is basically too decrepit now to even perform her own duties, yet witlessly unwilling to relinquish any of her powers to someone slightly less senile whilst her subjects look forward to a bleak, cold and hungry future, somehow, in a small town pub in the east midlands, gather a group of anarchic fun seekers in search of their true anthems of life.

For me, it's been a long road back - approx. two years, two months and 28 days since I last sat in the DJ chair, and boy - have I fucking missed it. Whilst in lockdown, this gave me plenty of opportunity to start cleaning up my laptop, and giving it a good upheaval of music of stuff that I doubt I'd ever play, and writing new sets for future possibilities. Can't say I was ever really sure about finding an opportunity for this particular set, but thankfully there cometh the platinum jubilee, and what a better excuse. I must have worked on this set for weeks on end to tweak and perfect the flow, only for the first and following requests to be mainly from 1978 and then some! Thus hence, any plans to try and stay true to my original form was just abandoned, although at the end of the night, there was only twenty songs I never actually got round to playing but they were mainly disco anyway! In the end, we played 92 songs from 78 bands with 26 requests.

Luckily the crowd were exactly whom I was hoping for, so for me, the night couldn't of gone any better, and I heartedly thank all that supported the night, sang your hearts out, and danced away. Thanks also to for those that shared the event on farcebook, not forgetting a big 'fuck you' go to the few local businesses and certain local on-line publications that wouldn't help advertise due to the theme of this successful night. Whom exactly are you trying to protect??

Hazard / Rats Nest @ Luton Underground 22.2.2020

Considering, once again, the last minute arrangements for this night - I was very impressed with the final outcome of the night. With the crap I'd had to put up with from others the week previous for just advertising this night, and with Hazard coming up to their 10th anniversary plus playing a free gig to mark this occasion next weekend, it was good to see the loyal support in attendance, with a lively crowd and both bands in good spirits. I was also extra pleased as I got to play longer than expected, with plenty of happy faces at my choices, including a flurry of people arriving after the bands had finished, and adding requests to the night. This night gave me a change to delve into a selection of music I rarely play, mixed with some newer psyche, which all seemed to work well, so pretty much a win-win in my book. Indeed, I face the next few months with plenty of extra strings to my DJ bow with some pretty diverse nights ahead, so keep an eye out for future nights.
