20 Years Of Dark Night In Luton 23.7.2022

First off, as with all my past events, I was overwhelmed at the support showed, especially at those that travelled a distance to support me, and as always, I thank you very much for your efforts, with a special thanks to Russ for making the nights sound so good!

Looking back, July 2018 was my last DJ anniversary set, celebrating 16 years at the time. I didn’t even acknowledge 2019, and obviously we lost 2020/2021, and ironically, I was trying to do back then what I was trying to achieve again this time and I’d even written myself a warning in my review of the night telling myself not to try again! My efforts to spread the word through local media failed, with 3CR ignoring all my messages, and even mp Rachel Hopkins, commended by myself for her acknowledgement of small businesses around the town, failed to reply, preferring to attend ‘Afrofest’ for her own political ends no doubt!

So with my return from a weeks break in Devon the day before, there was no build up for me for the event, which was definitely strange, but any excuse to dig out those old goth club hits once more to an understanding audience, even if ‘hot night syndrome’ was in full force, pushing the majority of people outside for the better part of the night.

As it was also such a milestone event, I’d gone through many past Coven pictures to try and rekindle past friendships to those that faded away after the closure of The Coven, but many didn’t bite or turn up, so I spent the night taking out those songs I’d especially included to a more receptive crowd. Weirdly enough, there were plenty of songs I sadly never got around to play (Merry Thoughts, Star Industry, Sheep On Drugs etc) yet ended up playing more that I hadn’t heard in years, especially towards the end of the night.

And lastly, as I also mentioned in my recent adverts, this was my 190th event at The George 2nd, and I only have one more night currently booked in August before our friendly landlord Eric hands back the keys back to Greene King in mid September. Heaven knows what will happen to the pub after this, especially with GKs past total mismanagement and failures, so support the pub while you can.

God Save The Queen - The Anti-Jubilee Special @ G2 4.6.2022

So let's try and capture the mood. So whilst the majority of the brainwashed, moronic public blindly celebrate our pointless and outdated monarch, whom is basically too decrepit now to even perform her own duties, yet witlessly unwilling to relinquish any of her powers to someone slightly less senile whilst her subjects look forward to a bleak, cold and hungry future, somehow, in a small town pub in the east midlands, gather a group of anarchic fun seekers in search of their true anthems of life.

For me, it's been a long road back - approx. two years, two months and 28 days since I last sat in the DJ chair, and boy - have I fucking missed it. Whilst in lockdown, this gave me plenty of opportunity to start cleaning up my laptop, and giving it a good upheaval of music of stuff that I doubt I'd ever play, and writing new sets for future possibilities. Can't say I was ever really sure about finding an opportunity for this particular set, but thankfully there cometh the platinum jubilee, and what a better excuse. I must have worked on this set for weeks on end to tweak and perfect the flow, only for the first and following requests to be mainly from 1978 and then some! Thus hence, any plans to try and stay true to my original form was just abandoned, although at the end of the night, there was only twenty songs I never actually got round to playing but they were mainly disco anyway! In the end, we played 92 songs from 78 bands with 26 requests.

Luckily the crowd were exactly whom I was hoping for, so for me, the night couldn't of gone any better, and I heartedly thank all that supported the night, sang your hearts out, and danced away. Thanks also to for those that shared the event on farcebook, not forgetting a big 'fuck you' go to the few local businesses and certain local on-line publications that wouldn't help advertise due to the theme of this successful night. Whom exactly are you trying to protect??

Hazard / Rats Nest @ Luton Underground 22.2.2020

Considering, once again, the last minute arrangements for this night - I was very impressed with the final outcome of the night. With the crap I'd had to put up with from others the week previous for just advertising this night, and with Hazard coming up to their 10th anniversary plus playing a free gig to mark this occasion next weekend, it was good to see the loyal support in attendance, with a lively crowd and both bands in good spirits. I was also extra pleased as I got to play longer than expected, with plenty of happy faces at my choices, including a flurry of people arriving after the bands had finished, and adding requests to the night. This night gave me a change to delve into a selection of music I rarely play, mixed with some newer psyche, which all seemed to work well, so pretty much a win-win in my book. Indeed, I face the next few months with plenty of extra strings to my DJ bow with some pretty diverse nights ahead, so keep an eye out for future nights.

1980 - The 40th Anniversary Special 15.2.2020

So, four months in the waiting and now just a faded hangover and few memories to go by! My God did we push the limits of promotion of this event, but only to be originally knocked by the Facebook Big Brother, cutting my invitations by 90% merely due to the slight biased Tory based description, Absolute Bowie Band playing Harpenden (of which I probably would of gone to otherwise) and then on the day, 'Storm Dennis' wreaking havoc across the UK (although let's face it, a bit of rain and a mild breeze is all that it takes to put most local people off supporting a free night!) In the end, I had to resort to +100 personal messages asking friends to help us push this night, but sadly, I can count the amount of people on one hand that actually did invite people in the end! Even after all this time, I still can't get used to peoples lethargy when it comes to a good night out!

Anyway, upon first coming up with the concept back in October 2019, I decided that this night was just too good an idea to play the once, so I tried my arm at selling it to other local venues, all the while knowing that I'd probably be wasting my time, and that G2 was the only place worthy of hosting this  night. The distinct lack of foresite with other venues these days really does seems to rule this town, so we buckled down and found our night, only for me to realise our booked date was the night after Valentines day!

Regardless, still being full of hope, we arrived to an already busy pub, and settled in pretty quickly. A good crowd all round, and I even met someone whose aunt was pictured in my poster! I'd also decided not to take requests, having so much music to work from, unless the request was age accurate/related, although trying to convince one lairy punter that David Bowies 'Space Oddity' was indeed released in 1969, and not 1983 of which she was originally convinced, didn't stop her from making her case! Ironically, she was later ejected from the pub, but that was nothing to do with us! There was also a few comments about too many album tracks, but I only counted approx 23 out of the 84 songs played, but you know I prefer to host the alternative than be a human jukebox!

So in the end, all in all we had a great and busy night with a full dance floor for the best part. Kudos to those that did support, especially to those that traveled and braved the weather, and to the constant loyal. This support means the world to us.

We're officially back at the end of March for 'The Spiral Staircase' alternative night, and I'll also be DJing at this weekends Hazard/Rats Nest gig at LU playing a mixture of new punk. For those that want more 80s, I'll be hosting an abridged version of this night in June at The Donkey in Leicester so maybe we'll see some of you there!

Legends Of Music @ Luton Underground 1.2.2020

Having only been invited to play this event some three days previous, we went in all guns blazing, regardless of the hangover from the Inferno event the night before. To be honest, covering 60 years  of music did seem somewhat ambivalent, but the night was always going to be crowd dependent, and you can easily tell where they got involved from the set below.

We covered the spread to a degree, although I don't really consider there to be any actual 'legends' from the 90s or 00s just yet, but most seemed happy with what was being played. We also had  quite a few people venturing to the venue for their first time, so hopefully we made a good impression.

With that, thanks to all that supported the night with such short notice, especially to those that came after the Flying Ants gig from down the road.

Inferno 31.1.2020

A usual quiet start to the new alternative year, at least for the beginning part of the night. Having been through hell and back, plus a return journey, I’d gone through a week of migraines, and Friday was no exception. Luckily for me, my trusted concubine, DJ Sharon was at hand to take over the first part of the night to save me having to stare into the glaring screen. This was good as it meant I could actually relax and mingle for a change!

Regardless, what was meant originally intended as a relaxing, ethereal and chilled start to the year, suddenly turned at 11pm and the reference to our theme for the evening hid in the corner whilst we entered the nu-metal world of the 2000s! Still, with a barrage of requests resulting in a thriving dance floor, I’m not going to moan!!

So unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’ll be back on Saturday 15th February for my swan song event of the year, with a collection of the best songs from my favourite year in music – 1980. As I’ve mentioned, FB have deemed the night politically inappropriate and severely cut invitations to just 10% of the norm, so any sharing of the event or sending of extra initiations to friends would be very appreciated! Other than that, my events are back to normal and the alternative nights will continue at the end of March, so keep watching the skies!!
