SECONDS - 14.9.2018

Definitely an interesting night musically on reflection. Undoubtedly, DJ Uncle Filthy stole the show with his choice industrial selections throughout, although the stubborn in me was always going to insist on sticking to the original theme of music based around John Frankenheimers film "SECONDS". A tad disconcerting to be unable to find anyone else that has actually watched the film though, so I do recommend you search it out if you get the chance!

So, with timings, seems that Ralph ended up with all the requests, but this meant I could get away with playing the new Soft Cell and Purple Heart Parade songs which sounded great btw as well as a few more tracks from the obscure! I also received some good feedback for the selection from 1966, although at this stage of the night, I was hoping to engage what few actual pub goers that were still around. Regardless, the night was well attended, and again we chose not to send out personal invites, so it just goes to show it doesn't really make much difference, although next months "Methods Of Dance" event we'll be back to normal, with invites already send out, so guess we'll see, and as usual, any help to spread the word is always appreciated.

So thanks to all that supported the night, the bar staff for putting up with the music, and to DJ Ralph Uncle Filthy for his great sets.

Well now there was a surprising night. In fact, I can't remember the last time I had such a busy August night! As some of you knew, this was advertised as a chilled night as usually July/August is dead time, especially with the town centre being such a non-entity these days. So chilled in fact, that no invites were even sent out, as I figured that those which seek a good night out down the pub would attend anyway what with the event being advertised and shared well, so you can imagine my surprise when we generated more people than usual!

Anyway, originally this event/concept and set was written for another pub in 2017, but after much effort on my part to write/tweak the set to their particular clientele, design a new poster etc, etc, the pub ignored my messages for a couple of months, so I thought 'fuck 'em' - lets just rewrite it and host the night where I'm at least a little more appreciated!

So, many thanks to those that supported the night, and helped share the event on Facebook. I know I certainly enjoyed myself and am looking forward to the September event even more. Remember, always be "Too weird to live, and too rare to die!"

Friday The 13th - 16 Years Of A Dark Luton 13.7.2018

After the big disappointment of last months Rosegarden event, I decided not to let this anniversary phase me and just to let the night flow and see what happens. We set sail to a few various tracks from The Matrix soundtrack, excuse being my soundcheck, taking full advantage of the G2 not really having any music on beforehand and let nature take its course officially starting just before 9pm.

The night in question was originally based upon my time hosting past club night 'The Coven' with the hoping of enticing old willing sinners back into the world, but in reality, it's been nearly 8 years since the demise of the club and the few I still know are very few and far between when it comes to supporting such events these days, plus we're also well into the quieter time of the year. so I can appreciate that people move on and life can get in the way, so as the night progressed, any songs originally featured that I used to play were more of a coincidence than purpose, and I plumped for how my mood was at the time.

Anyway, the night progressed very nicely with the passing trade, with even dancing as early as 9.30pm although with the weather being so good, most were not surprisingly in the beer garden or out the front with a good circle of friends to supporting me inside. A grand finale to finish with a flurry of dancing and some stomping music to boot! So thanks very much to those that supported the night and to the pleasant feedback I received.

Rosgarden Funeral Of Sores 15.6.2018

After one of the busiest promotion runs in the run up to this night, and being blown away by the amount of people that helped share the event, I must admit to being rather bemused at the lack of support for this themed night. Even my journey into town was mysteriously quiet, so finding G2 empty upon arrival was no surprise. I even hoped that advertising via the old Switch and Mad Hatters FB sites might prove a hit, but in reality, the projected demographic of over 50s I was aiming for, just didn't hit the mark with most friends only interested in going to the current run of 'alternative' jumble sales instead of a great night down the pub. I mean, WTF is that all about!?!

Still, things kinda slowly plodded along, until oddly we had a mass run at 1am till closing time, at which everybody seemed very happy with the themed selection, so at least we ended on a high.

So, with great thanks to the faithful few that that did turn up. Next month I'm celebrating my 16th year of running alternative nights in Luton, so I'm hoping that people might just restore my faith in the will to be weird.

Baggy Trousers 80s Night 26.5.2018

Bit of a frustrating start with the bloody football on in the pub, having to dumb down the first hour, but that's as far as the moaning goes for this post! Very soon after, we had a full pub, and best of all, a full dancefloor. The drinks flowed, the friends and punters kept coming, and the requests were relentless! It was so much fun seeing everyone really getting into the night, having not seen this since my indie night back in February.

So many thanks to all those that supported the night, especially as it's the only full-on themed 80s night I'll be doing this year. I'll be back to my usual Friday night slot on the 15th June, I'll be playing  a tribute to the best of the new wave scene from 1978 to 1981 with a night called "Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores" so keep an eye out for your invites!

X-The Unknown 11.5.2018

Well if the hangover was anything to go by, and my need for a take-away curry on Saturday night, I assume that Fridays alternative night was a good night! With my current enthusiasm directed to the end of the month 80s night, Junes main event and the weather turning that bit colder (although it was still damn hot in the pub!) I was feeling a tad reluctant about the night.

But the show must go on, and with the spirited few, now known as the 'last supper gang', the once empty pub slowly grew into a decent crowd, although not an alternative one I hasten to add, and after a few pints, and with the usual witty/sarcastic banter between Ralph and I, the night grew into a good laugh, with obviously a great selection of themed tracks to while away the hours!

So many thanks to those that showed their support. and to DJ Ralph, I'll be back at the end of May for a special bank holiday rare Saturday night appearance, playing host to my 'Baggy Trousers 80s night'  and expect to be bombarded with promos for the next official alternative frenzy, aka 'Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores' on the 15th June!

Disturbia 20.4.2018

While it was a welcome relief to finally see the sun, it just doesn’t seem to bode well when it comes to pub nights these days. Personally, I couldn’t wait to get out and have a few beers, but I guess that’s sadly just not the case for all! Still, I got to play some weird and wonderful tunes rarely heard in public, including the new Spear Of Destiny and Farida tracks, whilst the faithful few ventured out to ensure the night was enjoyable enough to make it worthwhile.

So, being knackered from work, poor ole Uncle Filthy & I switched sets so he could retire to bedlam earlier than usual, although I suspect when time came for Ralph to finish, we were all more in the mood to continue all night! Anyway, Ralph finished just before 1am, and while I’m sure there was no coincidence, the pub suddenly became its busiest and before we knew it, the night was over!

So, thanks for those that did suffer the warm weather and support our night, DJ Ralph for his musical input, and the G2 staff for putting up with us again! We’re back early than usual in May, but then I’ve two nights for you to enjoy (or ignore) so keep checking your invite boxes, and please don’t forget to help me out by inviting your friends too!
